About tuukkii

tuukkii fair trade exchange is a virtual marketplace/gallery/boutique helping artists, designers and craftspeople from developing nations around the world to display and sell their handmade creations to developed world buyers at a fair value.

The concept behind tuukkii was born back in 2002 when I had the great fortune of travelling to the Barbados. In my travels I came across a small shop in Bridgetown that produced some beautiful handbags made out of palm leaves. These handbags were so well made and beautiful that the shop featured numerous photos of models carrying them down the runaways in New York City. I got talking to the owner and craftswoman about the pictures and her handbags. She explained to me that a boutique owner from New York City would visit her shop each year to purchase her entire inventory and return to New York where she would sell them for $500 or more each. Needless to say I was quite impressed until I checked the price tag on her handbags. The handbags in the store were going for $30 to $45. This represented over 1000% margin for the boutique owner. My sole thought was wondering why this craftswoman wasn't getting a fair price for her work and thus the idea behind tuukkii was born.
